Under the direction of the Boiler Room Operation Coordinator, the plant operator will maintain a OE2 license; perform operational duties, repairs and maintenance on all associated equipment to boilers and auxiliary equipment. You will oversee the boilers and equipment that control the generation of a continuous supply of steam for heating the hospital and outlying buildings to fulfilling the requirements of various departments. Maintain a working knowledge of building components and State, local fire codes including JCAHO requirements in order to facilitate the efficient planning and execution of all maintenance and projects knowledge. Will perform a variety of diversified duties as needed primarily in Heating System maintenance, performs various maintenance assignments and assists other maintenance personnel in the repair and maintenance of physical structures, equipment and fixtures of the hospital. Ground keeping duties and maintain hospital aesthetics.

  • Performs diversified duties to operate boilers and auxiliary equipment to control the generation of a continuous supply of steam for heating the hospital and outlying buildings and to fulfill the requirements of various departments.
  • Performs firing operation and other incidental duties. Regulates size of flame and operates boiler controls adjusting for various loads. Starts and operates boilers. Brings on and off line, as required.
  • Performs constant surveillance of all operations, gauges, valves and visible and audible controls. Assures all components are cleaned and lubricated as scheduled.
  • Maintains the fireman-s log and log sheet and records conditions hourly.
  • Performs or assists with boiler repairs and component part repairs under the direction of the Boiler Room Operational Coordinator. Assists with preparing the boilers for annual inspection.
  • Assists other maintenance trades as required by workload or emergencies, or in the case of inclement weather conditions. Assists with snow removal, as needed.
  • Detects and reports faulty equipment, improper operations or unusual conditions to proper supervisor.
  • Maintains equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Follows all standards and prescribed safety regulations. RCRA Hazardous Waste Training.
  • Performs other duties assigned by Supervisor when working in the maintenance department.
  • Replaces light bulbs, works from verbal or written requests on minor repairs. Works with other tradesmen. Responds with urgency to Code Calls (444, 99, D).

  • Works with other trades assigned to perform work at the boiler house.
  • Collaborates with outside contracts as job permits.
  • Operates the boiler plant in compliance with state general laws and the guidelines of SEMC.
  • Maintains a professional appearance at all times. Wears I.D. badge.
  • Assists other trades as required by overload or emergency situations.
  • Assists with grounds, snow removal, general maintenance work and other duties. Comments:

  • Assure the safety of patients, staff and visitors through enforcement of department safety policies and procedures.   • Immediately reports all accidents and incidents to supervisor. Before seeking medical treatment, notifies supervisor of a work-related injury.
  • Keeps floor free from spills, trash or articles.
  • Demonstrates safe lifting practices.
  • Ability to demonstrate fire (emergency) evacuation plan.
  • Adheres to lock out/tag out procedures.
  • Cleans hands before entering and leaving a patients room.
  • ADDITIONAL TASKS.
  • Performs any additional assignments as required by the manager/supervisor.
  • Attends all scheduled meetings and in-services as directed by manager/supervisor.

  
Job Requirements
EDUCATION: High School Diploma

EXPERIENCE: Minimum five years trade experience.

LICENSURE: Must possess a State of Connecticut Operating engineers OE2 License.

SPECIAL SKILLS: Ability to read blueprints and specifications. Must be familiar with all plant operation guidelines, codes. Demonstrated knowledge of position in order to train and direct staff. Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both oral and written.

ACCOUNTABILITY: SEMC required safety training fire, bloodborne pathogens, infection control, etc. Pass physical examination required by client. Successful completion of hospital orientation. Successful completion of department orientation. Valid Driver’s License.
