SMA is currently recruiting for a full-time Senior CAD Design Technician III/IV for the General Civil Business Line in our Arvada, CO office. This candidate will be responsible for assisting Civil Engineers in application of principles, methods, and techniques of civil engineering technology. Applicants must have a minimum of 8 years of experience and be able to operate AutoCAD Civil 3D (version 2015-2019) at a highly efficient level. Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work independently on assigned projects, but be able to integrate skills into a team environment. Excellent communications skills are a must.

  • Assists in the analysis of reports, maps, drawings, tests and aerial photographs to plan and design projects.
  • Prepares complex design computations and quantity estimates.
  • Performs design of portions of non-routine projects or entire routine projects under direction of project engineer or ET IV.
  • Assists in the preparation of drawings and exhibits for reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules and permits for projects.
  • Have an understanding of survey data, industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • May have the ability to provide GIS mapping and other related duties.
  • Instructs junior technicians to reduce design to final drawings.
  • Provides technical support to other staff in area of expertise - is a trainer and mentor to other staff. Is cross-trained to have the ability to perform multiple duties.
  • Ability to access and utilize information databases.
  • May have the ability to provide GIS mapping and other related duties.
  • May be an active member of company technical committees.
  • Ability to work with little supervision.
  • Responsible for job specific quality system tasks as defined in quality manual.
  • Ability to complete project plans with limited supervision.

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school and 8 10 years of related experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of CAD and Civil 3D.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, slopes, elements, latitude, longitude, state plane coordinates area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of algebra and geometry.
  • Proficient at survey mathematics and geometry with the ability to calculate Cartesian coordinates, traverse closures / adjustments, intersections, resections, horizontal curves and vertical curves as well as end area and volume calculations knowledge.
  • Must have the ability to operate a computer and computer software related to the field of civil engineering.
  • Knowledge of land surveying standards.
