Job Description

Berkeley Lab’s Environment, Health, & Safety Division (EHS) has an opening for a Technical Training Specialist to join their Training Group!

In this role, you will to teach/facilitate in-class, online/web-based, and hands-on EHS courses to Berkeley Lab staff and contractors. This position will be responsible for teaching/facilitating EHS courses that are designed to meet regulatory and contractual training requirements including those necessary to meet OSHA, DOE, CFR, and/or NFPA-70E requirements.

This role will report to the EHS Training Manager and working in coordination with EHS, Operations, and technical program subject matter experts, program customers and relevant stakeholders.

What You Will Do:

  • Teach in-class Health and Safety courses and facilitate hands-on practical skills assessments.

  • Work with EHS Instructional Designers and subject matter experts to help develop course and instructional materials.

  • Analyze needs, design, develop, and deliver technical training programs designed for all levels of employees and contractors to promote knowledge of and compliance with EHS issues and requirements.

  • Utilize appropriate training vehicles for delivery of training and learning.

  • Evaluates training, uses metrics and analytics to evaluate effectiveness of training to specific operational needs and requirements.

  • Provides training, learning and developmental solutions to a wide variety of difficult scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors, trending and best practices.

  • Exercises judgment within generally defined policies and current regulations in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining optimum solutions. Maintains and enhances knowledge, expertise and skills through personal growth and development. Able to learn the business and apply knowledge to specific learning opportunities.

  • Promote a professional work environment in accordance with established division, operational, and institutional objectives, policies, procedures and plans.

  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

What is Required:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience as a Technical Training Specialist or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Outstanding training skills with proven experience facilitating in-class, on-line and web-based activities, group exercises, case studies and learning assessments.

  • Proven experience developing in-class, online/web-based or combination of instructional materials for adult learners.

  • Proven experience creating and delivering engaging and effective learning programs that integrate adult learning principles as a core component of teaching/learning.

  • Broad knowledge of theories, principles, and techniques in a specific field of EH&S specialization, plus solid working knowledge of related disciplines.

  • Demonstrated experience as an in-class instructor and hands-on skills trainer in one or more of the following areas: Lockout/Tagout, NFPA 70E, electrical safety, and/or other ES&H topics.

  • Excellent presentation, training, and classroom management skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work successfully with a diverse adult population across all organizational levels.

  • Excellent customer service, collaboration and partnership knowledge and skills that enable successful learning and development across complex and diverse organizations.

  • Advanced expertise using MS Office for technical documents, presentations and instructional materials.

  • Professional organization affiliation and/or certifications with the following:

    • Association for Training Development (ATD).

    • Certified Professional in Learning and Performance.

    • Online Training Professional.

  • Knowledge of Environment, Health and Safety principles and practices.

  • Experience designing instructional materials for classroom and/or online.

  • Academic training or job experience working in a scientific or technical environment.

  • Skills and experience providing train-the-trainer instruction.

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year, Term appointment. This position has the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.

  • Salary Range: $8,448 - $11,616 monthly.

  • Work will primarily be performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
